Carrieres de Lumieres in Provence & Atelier des Lumières in Paris

Carrieres de Lumieres in Provence & Atelier des Lumières in Paris are the two venues for the stunning art-themed digital Sound & Light exhibitions.  Both venues use over 100 projectors and a spatial sound system. The overall effect is a recreation of artworks screened onto 10 meters high walls, ceilings and floors!

Carrieres de Lumieres in Provence – Van Gogh Sound & Light Show

You cannot beat the the French for their incredible artistic creativity. They have managed to convert both an abandoned, limestone quarry in Provence and an old iron foundry in Paris into impressive venues for world famous Sound and Light shows!

The viewer experiences changing and moving art works that are synchronized & choreographed with beautiful music. You are transported and immersed into a magical art world!  Both these sites are a MUST to visit when in Paris and in Provence.

Carrieres de Lumieres (Quarries of Light) in Provence

Next to the beautiful Provence village Les Baux-de-Provence is an abandoned, white limestone quarry. The quarry is carved inside a mountain and is made up of huge rooms divided by limestone rock walls. Since 1977, the abandoned quarry has been used for sound and light shows. However, in 2012 the Sound & Light shows became art-theme based and officially named: Les Carrières de Lumières.

These digital art shows are so incredible that the quarry has become a major tourist attraction when visiting Southern France. We visited early June and at the end of the day. The venue was packed with tourists.

The current Sound & Light show in Provence is  “Van Gogh, Starry Night”. The show runs throughout the day and lasts for about 30 minutes. In between each showing there is another shorter and just as impressive exhibition of Japanese ukiyo-e  art. We went for the Van Gogh show but loved the ukiyo-e show just as much.

Atelier des Lumières (Workshop of Light) in Paris

Since the Sound and Light show in Provence was such a major success, the idea was duplicated in Paris . The Paris venue is called Atelier des Lumières (“Workshop of Light”). The venue is an old, abandoned iron foundry. The Atelier des Lumières opened its doors to the public in 2018 and became an instant hit! This place is already a MUST see site when visiting the capital.

Note that Atelier des Lumières is very popular and crowded. To avoid waiting in long queues, I highly recommend that you book tickets online and in advance (for no extra cost). Press here to book.

In Paris, there are two current Sound & Light shows to choose from. One Sound & Light show is  “Van Gogh” and the second is “Klimt”. Choose one or go to BOTH!!
