Firstly before discussing the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibitions that are attracting crowds by the millions all across the globe, you need to understand the general concept of an immersive art experience.

An immersive art exhibition presents art in a way that you, the viewer, is surrounded by and made to feel part of the inner world of the artist. This new concept has redefined how we can view and appreciate different forms of art. In practice, immersive art exhibitions use state-of-the-art, multiple video projections as well as lights, sounds and music. Onto huge walls, floors, ceilings, staircases and doors. Wherever you turn, you will find yourself totally surrounded by the art, creating a stunning multi sensory experience.

5. Imagine Van Gogh: The Immersive Exhibition

Albert Plécy, a French photographer, invented the very first art immersive exhibition in 1977 by , in Les Baux-de-Provence, Southern France. He transformed a former underground quarry into an immersive venue named Cathédrale d’Images. The experience immersed its visitors into the art world of the artist through his new technique of Image Totale©

In 2001, Annabelle Mauger joined the creative team and created the first Van Gogh immersive exhibition. Since their first show of Imagine Van Gogh, the immersive art exhibition played in Montréal in 2019 followed by Québec and Winnipeg in 2020, and Vancouver, Edmonton, Boston and Tacoma/Seattle in 2021.

Imagine Van Gogh is an animated projected collage of around 200 artworks. It covers Van Gogh’s most prolific period from the final two years of his life. Classical hits by Saint-Saëns, Mozart, Bach, Delibes and Satie accompany the dancing and swirling projections. There is also a fascinating “educational room,” conceived by the art historian Androulla Michael.
