Tips for Visiting the Van Gogh Amsterdam Museum

The Van Gogh Amsterdam museum is Awesome!

The Van Gogh Art Museum Amsterdam is one of my favorite art museums in the world. It offers a stunning collection of so many of Vincent Van Gogh’s famous paintings. The paintings in the museum are arranged in chronological order and document Van Gogh‘s life from childhood to death.

This museum houses the largest collection of Van Gogh’s artworks in the world! The permanent collection includes over 200 paintings, 500 drawings and more than 750 letters.  In addition to Van Gogh’s masterpieces, there are beautifl paintings of his contemporaries, such as Gauguin, Monet and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Through the paintings and letters, we get a glimpse at Van Gogh’s personal relationships with family and friends. The paintings also provide us with details about where he lived and the places that inspired him to paint.

The Van Gogh Amsterdam Museum Does NOT Overwhelm!

The building itself is very impressive and large but it is easy to navigate and not overwhelming. The paintings are displayed over four floors, however there is an elevator if you have mobility issues.

As you walk through the exhibition, you will notice how his style changes over time, and sometimes under the influence of other painters around him. It was especially apparent when he was working closely with Gaugin in Arles.

Important! Pre-book your tickets!!

The Van Gogh Art Museum in Amsterdam is very popular both with tourists and locals. It is always very busy. Therefore it is important that you pre-book your tickets in advance otherwise you may spend a long time waiting in a queue outside. And even then, you may not even be permitted entry as it is too busy with others who have prebooked.

Also, be warned that it is a timed entry and there is a 30 minute grace period before or after the time stated on your ticket. They are strict about the time written on your ticket, so arrive at the museum on time.

Also note, that the museum has a strict ‘no pictures’ rule and you need to leave big bags in the cloakroom.

This is by far the best museum I have ever been to. My husband and I spent 4 hours here. I highly recommend getting the audio guide. It really added to the experience and gave good context to the various paintings both by Van Gogh and others.

Afterwards or evening during your time in the museum, you can rest your legs in the lovely cafe.
