Art Museums in France with Wonderful Collections of the French Post Impressionists

Also art museums in France with rich collections of artworks of the post-impressionism painters. These also include artworks from all the post impressionism art movements. These include:

  • Neo-impressionism – an art movement inspired by Paul Signac and Georges Seurat that applies an optical theory. This theory states that rather than mix colors together, you can place small dots or brushes of color side by side. The mixing of colors takes place from a suitable distance, in the viewer’s eye, as an “optical mixture”
  • Synthetism and Symbolism- was an art movement created by Paul Gauguin, Émile Bernard and other artists in Pont-Aven during 1886-1890. Their philosophy was that an artwork should incorporate the artist’s impressions and memories.  This was a reaction against rationalism & materialism in the Western European culture. The idea was that art could portray the expression of an idea and feelings rather than a realistic description of the natural world.
  • Fauvism – was the art movement created by the Fauves (French for “the wild beasts”). These were a group early 20th-century modern artists whose used bold and strong colors, rather than the realistic tones used by Impressionists. Some Fauvism artists include Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck, Andre Derain, Raoul Dufy and others.
  • Cubism – Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque founded the cubism art movement. They used geometric shapes to portray humans and other subjects in their artworks. Over time, their use of geometric shapes became so prominent that often the viewer could hardly discern the represented form. Cubism paved the groundwork to abstract art.

Prominent artists in the post-impressionism art movement include:

  • Vincent Van Gogh
  • Henri de Toulouse Lautrec
  • Paul Signac
  • Georges Seurat
  • Paul Cezanne
  • Paul Gauguin
  • Camille Pissarro

The large majority of impressionism and post-impressionism art museums in France are located in three regions where most of the artists lived and loved to paint. These regions are:

  1. Paris – the epicenter of the art world in the 19th and 20th centuries
  2. Normandy (the birthplace of impressionism); and
  3. Southern France (the French Riviera and Provence)
